1952 - 1968

William E. Abernathy began his ministry on July 1, 1952. He, with the aid of other men, organized the Boy’s Brigade, bringing many community youths under the teaching of the Gospel. Pioneer Girls was another outreach, combining fun, crafts, memorization, and Bible knowledge. In May 1959 the "Peet Property" which joins the church grounds on the north became available and was purchased for a parsonage; the old one was sold.

A large two-story educational building which faces Rosemont Avenue was added. This contains a fellowship hall, kitchen, library, Pastor’s study, and many classrooms. It was dedicated on May 24, 1964.

Pastor Abernathy was a man to roll up his sleeves and pitch in when it came to work. Under his guidance the furnishings of the main auditorium were turned to face west rather than north, increasing the accommodations for 30 more people. A new baptistry was installed at this time and a modern radio laboratory was fully equipped, enabling the pastor to conduct a daily radio ministry.
Some missionary work in our own back yard was accomplished by sponsoring our branch church, Bethel Baptist, in Bridgeton. Now it is independent and has many Japanese Christians in its membership.
Pastor Abernathy resigned in December, 1968.
